Kids love being active and there are more and more organized events for kids across Canada. In addition to riding bikes to the park, swimming in backyard pool and playing hockey in the winter, have a look at local kids and family events that might instil a love of racing in your kids while helping raise funds for some very worthy causes.
TRi KiDS – The SunRype Tri KiDS Triathlon Series – Complete not Compete. Canada’s only triathlon series “JUST FOR KIDS”. My kids LOVE these triathlons and have done at least 9 of them over the past 3 years! Across Canada and welcoming kids from ages 3-15, this triathlon series is great for everyone from beginners to experienced triathletes! Races held June- September in Burlington, Oakville, Milton, Fergus, Niagara Falls, Ottawa, Burnaby, Okanagan, and Calgary. The SunRype TRi KiDS Triathlon Series is proud to support the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario (POGO). In 2013, TRi KiDS athletes and Run Well Events raised over $12,000 through personal fundraising bringing our total to over $78,000 in five years. The Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario (POGO) was founded in 1983 by a group of pediatric oncologists to champion childhood cancer care. As the voice of the childhood cancer community, POGO works to ensure that all of Ontario’s children have equal access to state-of-the-art diagnosis, treatment and required services.
TriGator – TriGator FOR KIDS is a not for profit organization managed and operated by a small group of devoted volunteers. The start and finish line is in the heart of downtown, the route is lines with cheering spectators and finishers (of age) can celebrate with pizza and a beer.
Meredith Hagan Trail Run – The Meredith Hagan Foundation has been formed to keep Meredith’s legacy alive by continuing the things she thrived at everyday; inspiring people to live a great life through health and fitness, promoting cycling and running safety, and giving back to those in need. The Inspiration Run will be held every year in June – always around her birthday. This is an opportunity to hit the trails for either a 5km walk/run or 10km run in Mountsberg Conservation Area. This is a great family event, our kids have run this with us every year – our youngest was 5 years old when she walked/ran (and was carried!) her first 5km!
Erica’s Wish – Erica’s Wish is a 1k. 5k. 10k race in Toronto, ON to comfort and raise awareness of Osteosarcoma and kids fighting Cancer. Erica’s Wish was created when a beautiful girl named Erica, was diagnosed with Osteogenic Sarcoma (Osteosarcoma). Osteosarcoma is the same cancer that Terry Fox had. Erica like Terry, had a long series of chemotherapy treatments and a modified amputation. Family friend, Sue Strong visited Erica in the hospital and asked “what should we do for your 13th birthday” Erica promptly said “put on a race to raise awareness of kids with Cancer”. In that 5 second thought, Erica’s Wish was created. We are well known for our “feel good” event as there is a distance for everyone.
Gabrielle’s Ride – Gabrielle’s Ride is a bike ride, instead of run, for all ages and abilities with distances that cover a Tyke Ride, 10km, 20km, 50km and 100km. Gabrielle’s Ride is a charity cycle help in July that was inspired by the life of Gabrielle Ide Cinanni and takes place annually in Oakville. Funds raised by this event will support the SickKids Foundation and will be used for life saving research, the development of social programs, and the support of families affected by congenital heart disease and paediatric stroke. Gabrielle’s Ride will share her story of passion and hope through our commitment to the children who share her challenges ever day. The whole family will love Gabrielles Ride – so much to do at the interactive play zone.
